How to Stay Connected to Yourself During Hard Times

What can help you return to life in difficult circumstances: small actions, attention to the body, inner support and a conscious effort toward life.

Sometimes life brings periods when there is no strength. Not just ordinary tiredness, but a feeling that everything inside has tightened, and every day requires effort.

In those moments, it is very easy to stop feeling life. To lie down, close off and wait until it becomes easier. Sometimes that is truly needed: rest, sleep, help, silence, support.

But sometimes something else is needed too: to make one small conscious effort in the direction of life.

A conscious effort in the direction of life

I remember a period when I would fall asleep by making an effort: consciously relaxing my body and mind, stopping every inner activity so I could enter sleep. Knowing that I would wake up in extremely difficult conditions.

Every day I got up, put on a uniform I hated, went to receive breakfast, gave it to someone else and went to do yoga, Tibetan exercises and then a silence practice.

While others had breakfast and went back to sleep, I had time for morning practices and a shower.

Every time, because of the inner pain, I wanted to lie down and cry. But I got up and returned myself to myself.

Through will.
From the need to feel life inside, at any cost.

Small actions as support

I made myself a list of activities organized by hour so that the structure would keep me in tone.

Exercise.
Reading.
Ab work.
Meditation.
Learning.
Drawing with another woman.
Practice in any circumstances.

Through these actions, I was able to keep the feeling: I am alive in this moment.

It was not about productivity. Not about “pull yourself together and be strong.” It was about not losing contact with life.

What changed afterward

Now every morning I wake up and feel joy simply because I hear rain, or the sun is shining on my face. Because I can get up, drink water, hear my child breathing, kiss my husband, feel my own body.

Without effort.

And I see that conscious effort in the direction of life is not about enduring pain. It is about returning yourself to feeling. Until life begins to sound on its own.

What can help during a hard time

  1. 1Very small actions. You do not need to change your whole life immediately. Sometimes it is enough to get up, wash your face, drink water or step outside.
  1. 1Contact with the body. Feel your feet, breath, hands and face. Return from thoughts into the present.
  1. 1A simple structure for the day. Not a strict regime, but support: sleep, food, movement, connection with loved ones, silence.
  1. 1Space for feelings. Do not pretend everything is fine. Recognize: this is hard, I am scared, I am tired, I am angry, I am alive.
  1. 1Support. If the state is severe, it is important to seek professional help and not remain alone.

A 3-minute practice

Ask yourself:

  1. 1What can bring me back to life by at least one percent right now?
  2. 2What is the smallest action I can take?
  3. 3Where do I feel support in my body?
  4. 4Who or what reminds me that I am not alone?
  5. 5How can I care for myself today without making it a heroic act?

Choose one small action. Only one.

And do it not for a perfect result, but for contact with life.

When a practice or personal session may help

If you are going through a hard period, feeling loss of support, tiredness, anxiety or inner emptiness, you can come to a practice or personal session.

This is not a replacement for professional help in severe states. But it can be a supportive space where you can hear yourself, find the next step and restore a sense of inner support.

FAQ

What should I do if I have no energy at all?

Begin with the smallest possible action: water, breath, body, sleep, a message to someone close. Do not demand a big breakthrough from yourself.

How do I stay connected to myself during a hard time?

Through small regular supports: body, breath, movement, simple daily structure, support from others and honest recognition of your feelings.

When do I need professional help?

If the state becomes severe or prolonged, or if there is any sense of danger to yourself or others, it is important to contact a doctor, therapist, crisis service or another qualified professional.
